Azores

We spent a week on São Miguel Island, the main island in the Azores. Billed as the ‘mini Hawaii’ of Europe, it’s a volcanic situated in the middle of the Atlantic, along the mid-atlantic ridge. Due to its position the weather can be very unpredictable with its fair share of rain, but we were pretty fortunate with the weather. The first few days in particular we had some beautiful light, with some large, dramatic waves. Lagoa do Fogo was a highlight of the trip. A sketchy drive up to the lake, but once there it was stunning, and I don’t think we could’ve timed it better. Sete Cidades on the other hand proved trickier. It spends much of its time shrouded in cloud, but we had a window of opportunity on the last day and paid a visit.
