I shouldn’t even have been here. The plan was to spend two mornings at RSPB Snettisham watching the Wader Spectacular, but the first day had been something of a disappointment, numbers were down on previous years and the weather was the worst kind – dull, flat and grey. I’d got talking to a couple when I’d first arrived who mentioned how fantastic the boat trips were from Morsten Quay to Blakeney Point, so I thought I would try something new and give the Seal trip a go instead on the second day. So glad I did, it was one of the best boat trips I’ve ever been on with such incredibly close up views of the Seals, who are completely unperturbed by the presence of the boats. Two species reside at Blakeney Point, the Common Seals and the Grey Seals. The UK population of Grey Seals accounts for over half the World’s population. The Common Seals, by contrast, are in fact far less common in the UK. There were also diving juvenile Gannets, plenty of Oystercatchers, at least half a dozen Little Egret in the tributaries as well as a large number of Gulls and Terns. I’d highly recommend the trip, I went with Beans Boat Trips but there are a number of tour operators running from the Quay. I can also highly recommend the National Trust cafe, I had the best Blueberry Bakewell I’ve ever had!
