Interview with BBC Radio Surrey

I spoke with BBC Surrey journalist Patrick Barlow yesterday about our Woking Peregrines. This year they’ve laid 5 eggs, which whilst not that unusual, is still quite significant. A normal year would tend to see 4 eggs laid, and its the first time that this particular pair have laid 5. Our previous pair managed to lay 5 eggs on 3 separate occasions, and they were certainly one of the most successful breeding pairs in the country.

At the time of the interview three eggs had hatched, and so Patrick contacted me wishing to find out more, and what sort of future lay ahead of them.

Last year was not a great year for the Woking Peregrines. 4 eggs were laid, but only 3 hatched. Upon fledging one of them immediately got into trouble and ended up at Wildlife Aid in Leatherhead, and unfortunately had to be euthanised. Another went missing, and was eventually found dead on the top of Export House. So only one made it to fully fledging. So this year, with the 5 eggs being laid, there’s cause for optimism. We’ll keep out fingers crossed that all 5 can successfully fledge.
